Shortly after opening Pedego St. Louis, Bill began explaining to some customers how they could commute, save money, and live their lives on an electric bike. After several months, he decided to walk the walk. Bill stopped driving his car and started using his electric bike to commute to the store every day, run short errands, shop, and exercise. With the intensity of the four seasons in St. Louis, he thought it would be impossible. It wasn’t, and Bill rode each day last winter, saving thousands of dollars on gas, insurance, and maintenance, as well as reducing his carbon footprint tremendously.

Many find it hard to envision this change in lifestyle, but the reality is most people live their lives locally. Without a highway commute, and with many people working-from-home due to COVID, most errands are short distances. The grocery stores and markets most people frequent, as well as the pharmacies, schools, work, and service providers they select are generally close to their homes. Bill starts and ends each day with a bike ride. Before electric bikes became ubiquitous, he frequently rode his bike 12 miles one way to work, but was always exhausted upon arriving. 

“Had electric bike technology existed at the time, I would have commuted that distance every day and arrived refreshed,” said Bill Sauerwein, co-owner of Pedego St. Louis. “Now, the freedom of an electric bike has enabled me to make trips like this easily, as well as stay healthy and live a more eco-friendly lifestyle.”

This story is a very specific representation of a larger trend, namely the overall increase in biking infrastructure and the amount of people biking within the U.S. For example, the city of San Diego has committed to building over 1,000 miles of biking infrastructure by 2030, with over 400 miles already built (Anderson, 2021). One of the main reasons for this overhaul is safety. A study done by researchers at the Universities of Colorado Denver and New Mexico discovered that cities with clear and separate biking infrastructure had 44% fewer deaths among bikers, automobiles, and pedestrians than cities without it (Marshall & Ferenchak, 2019). With statistics like these, it is no surprise that more and more people and cities are taking a serious look at the benefits of biking.

Brandon Knight is a man that lives in the downtown New Braunfels area. Due to an unfortunate accident, Branded was left with right-sided partial paralysis. Despite this, Brandon made a living running a delivery service for some of the downtown businesses, using his trike as his main source of transportation for work and pleasure. However, due to the Texas heat and the large number of hills in the area, Brandon began riding less and less, severely affecting his job and income.

It was around this point in time that Brandon met Kristen Pokky, who goes by her nickname “Pokky,” at a local Farmers Market. After becoming close and hearing Brandon’s story and struggles, she found that she could not sit idly by, and fortunately for both parties, she had the means to help. Pokky is the store owner of Pedego New Braunfels, and as such was uniquely positioned to help Brandon with his transportation problem.

Pokky petitioned Pedego headquarters on Brandon’s behalf, and was able to secure a Pedego electric trike to replace the non-electric one Brandon currently owned. Pokky, the Pedego New Braunfels team, and Brandon’s mom were able to give him the trike on October 10th, three days prior to his birthday. The reason for the date they chose is that on his birthday, Brandon typically rides into downtown to see all of the vendors that know him. He greets them all, hangs out with each of them for a while, and they in turn give him birthday gifts in the form of free donuts, lunch, and even a haircut. This year, Brandon was able to make that trip with the ease, joy, and fun that can only come from riding a Pedego. 

“After getting to know Brandon and hearing his story, there was no way I could sit idly by and do nothing,” said Pokky, owner of Pedego New Braunfels. “Thanks to my position as a store owner, and the aid from Pedego headquarters, Brandon is now able to get around more easily and continue his work downtown, with the added fun bonus of riding a Pedego.”

Brandon is not the only person who has benefited from New Braunfels efforts. In a similar vein, George, who also has had partial right-sided paralysis from birth, was given a bike to supplement his work. When Pokky saw George walking to his job in the heat, she immediately set about securing a bike for him. Now, George uses his Pedego to get around, including to his job at Dos Rios, a local Mexican restaurant in the area.

Kristen “Pokky” is a registered nurse with years of experience in a community with mobility issues and physical challenges. She herself has a muscle disease, and as such an active person was continually disheartened by her inability to do everything she wanted to. It was this that ultimately led her to buy an e-bike, allowing her to find a new freedom. This new freedom meant so much to her that she eventually quit her nursing job during COVID and opened a Pedego store.

John Collins was a prospective Pedego owner who wanted a bike as his main means for transportation rather than the bus. However, John lived in a 2nd floor apartment, and quickly realized that he would not be able to get the bike up and down the stairs with ease. James Lorentzen, co-owner of Pedego Tucson, suggested locking the bike up downstairs while keeping the battery in his apartment, but that too had some problems as the apartment manager refused to allow using the property infrastructure (pool railings, sign posts) to lock up the bike.

It was at this point that James, along with his wife and fellow co-owner Rachele, proposed that the apartment complex build a bike rack in the apartment common area, offering to take care of the expenses as a community favor. The couple proposed that Pedego Tucson would pay ⅔ of the cost for a 5-bike rack, while the apartment complex would pay the remaining ⅓. This was finally approved, but not before John himself, as eager as he was to own a Pedego, offered to put $100 in to complete the project.

“This was an example of not giving up on someone’s dream,” said James, co-owner of Pedego Tucson. “We feel very privileged to have been able to make this happen, and the smile on John’s face made the money and time spent to get the rack set up more than worthwhile.”

James and Rachele Lorentzen have been co-owners of Pedego Tucson since January of 2018. Prior to owning a Pedego store, James had over 30 years of experience in aerospace sales and business development, he is also a licensed pilot. His wife Rachele also has extensive business and management experience, managing a $2M budget at a USA Swim Club, among quite a few other positions. The couple met on a blind date in Orange County, and have been married for over 32 years, with two fully grown children aged 29 and 26.

Pedego Lake Norman will hold a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its grand opening at 1:00 pm on Saturday, October 9th. The Lake Norman Chamber of Commerce will be in attendance, as well as representatives from the Town of Cornelius Board of Commissioners. The public is invited to help celebrate the opening of Pedego Lake Norman and learn more about their electric bikes.

Pedego is thrilled to introduce itself to the Lake Norman community. Located in the Antiquity Shopping Center in Cornelius, the store is adjacent to the beautiful Antiquity Greenway, which is part of the Carolina Thread Trail. Old Town Cornelius, Main Street in Davidson, the gorgeous Rocky River Greenways, Caldwell Station Creek Greenway, and Bailey Road Park are all easily accessible from the store’s front door.

Tom Kennedy, who spent 25 years working in various sales positions for Dole Fresh Fruit, was ready for a change in scenery when he learned that a former associate of his was opening Pedego storefronts in his previous sales territory. After doing some research into Pedego and their store locations, Tom discovered that Pedego was devoid of stores in the Charlotte and Lake Norman areas. With his experience in sales, this seemed like the perfect opportunity for Kennedy. 

Tom’s background in sales was not the only reason opening a Pedego store felt like the right move for the Kennedy’s. Tom’s wife, Grace, has spent the last 13 years working in marketing and communications for various nonprofit organizations. With Tom’s experience in sales, along with Grace’s background in marketing, the pair were perfectly suited to have a successful new venture into the world of first-time entrepreneurs opening Pedego Lake Norman.

Debbie spent 21 years working a corporate job while raising her two older daughters as a single mother. After remarrying and giving birth to twins, she concentrated her time over the last 12 years raising the twins and getting involved at their schools. Debbie has long had the spirit of an entrepreneur and was eager to find a product that would encourage people to get outside, exercise, and most importantly have fun. With this in mind, Pedego seemed like the perfect fit for her entrepreneurial spirit. 

“We’re excited to establish a Pedego Electric Bike store in this community,” said Debbie.  “With the opening of Pedego Madison, we hope we can bring adventure and fun to people’s lives in a new way.”  The area surrounding Madison is very bike friendly and has a wide variety of bike trails within the vicinity of the store.

Pedego Madison held a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate its grand opening on Friday, October 1st. Mayor Robert Conley was in attendance, as well as several members from the Madison Chamber of Commerce, and over 70 Pedego enthusiasts and customers. The Madison store raffled off a Pedego electric bike at the ceremony, raising almost $3,000 for the Interfaith Food Pantry in Morristown which serves Morris County residents in need by providing access to food, education, and other resources.

The Palooza event, which featured live music, food and drinks, giveaways, as well as guided mini history & river tours on Pedego brand electric bikes, celebrated the store moving into their 11th year of being open. This was a monumental event as it is one of the first Pedego stores to open after the company was founded in 2008. “It was such a blessing to be able to celebrate the success of not only our store, but of Pedego as a whole and the ways in which this company has changed people’s lives,” said Pedego Bend owner, Kevin Rea. The CEO of Pedego, Don DiCostanzo, and Director of Business Development, Cynthia Newcomb, were in attendance and celebrated the occasion along with 100 members of the Pedego Bend community. Local news channel KTVZ was also in attendance to report on the event and interview Don. 

Being tucked away in the heart of downtown Bend, the store has serviced over 2,000 customers each year since it first opened in October of 2010. With 19 models to choose from, Pedego attracts clients from all walks of life, many of which rely on their Pedego as a daily necessity. Dr. Shawn Taylor, a medical doctor, has found a unique and helpful use for her Pedego. Using her “City Commuter” model, Dr. Taylor has been able to conduct house calls to various members of her local community, before and during the pandemic. 

Dr. Taylor is not the only member of the Pedego Bend community who has discovered the various uses of a Pedego. Nora Miller, a registered nurse and a dedicated member of the Pedego community, uses her “City Commuter” as a means of transportation for both work and pleasure. Nora has been an advocate for the Bend store for years, sponsoring Pedego trips with friends such as riding around the rim at Crater Lake. Nora was also featured in the very first video made by the Bend team several years ago. David Swanson, a valued member of the Pedego community, has also found the pleasures that a Pedego can bring.
