Are you considering hopping on the electric bike trend? Before you take off on your Pedego Electric Bike adventure, it’s important to understand the rules and regulations surrounding ebikes in the United States. Each state has its own set of laws governing these innovative rides, from speed limits to classifications and age requirements. In this blog post, we’ll help you have a smooth and enjoyable ride wherever you go.

Federal Level: Setting the Baseline

Let’s start with the basics. According to federal law, an ebike is defined as “a two-or three-wheeled vehicle with fully operable pedals and an electric motor of less than 750 watts that provides propulsion assistance.” The maximum speed allowed for a throttle-assist ebike, which is powered solely by the motor, is less than 20 mph on a paved surface. However, federal regulations leave much of the governance to individual states, allowing them to set their own rules. And, even though this article will focus on state and federal regulations, please remember that cities and counties may also have their own laws, so always check those websites, too, before you ride.

Pedego’s Electric Bikes comply with federal regulations, offering a range of e-bikes that fall within the prescribed parameters. Whether you prefer a Class I, Class II, or Class III electric bike, you’ll find the perfect Pedego model to suit your needs.

State Level: The Patchwork of Regulations

State legislation plays a crucial role in defining the specifics of ebike regulations. Each state has the authority to regulate electric bike use and establish additional laws, such as requiring a license and registration, based on a bike’s classification. The good news is that many states have enshrined their regulations in the legislature, ensuring riders have a clear understanding of the rules. You can access the rules specific to your state here

E-Bike Classes: Understanding the Differences

When it comes to electric bikes, there are three distinct classes: Class I, Class II, and Class III, and different laws apply to each. Let’s take a closer look at each:

Exploring Class I Electric Bikes: Enhance Your Riding Experience with Pedego’s Mountain Trail-Ready E-Bike

These bikes provide assistance as you pedal, making your ride smoother and more enjoyable. Class I electric bikes have a top speed of 20 mph and are legal on most bike paths and lanes. Pedego has one class 1 e-bike made for mountain trails.

Pedego Elevate - Class 1 Electric Bike
Pedego Elevate – Class 1 Electric Bike

Unlocking Convenience and Flexibility with Pedego’s Class II Electric Bikes:

Embrace Effortless Mobility or Pedal-Powered Freedom With a Class II electric bike, you have the option to engage the throttle and enjoy electric-powered movement without pedaling. These bikes also have a top speed of 20 mph and are generally allowed on roads and bike lanes. Pedego’s Class II ebikes offer the best of both worlds, allowing you to pedal or use the throttle as you please. All of Pedego’s ebikes are Class 2, except for the Elevate.

Pedego Avenue - Class 2 Electric Bike

Unleash Speed and Thrills with Pedego’s Class III Electric Bikes:

Upgrade Your Ride for Exhilarating Adventures Class III electric bikes provide pedal assistance up to 28 mph, offering a thrilling ride for speed enthusiasts. However, their use is limited to road lanes and on-road bike lanes. Pedego offers Class III electric bike upgrades on certain models for those seeking a little extra speed and excitement on their rides. Remember to check your state’s regulations as not all states allow the use of Class III ebikes. Some of Pedego’s Class 2 ebikes offer an optional Class 3 upgrade.

If you’re new to the world of electric bikes, you may have come across terms like Class 1, Class 2, and Class 3. What do these classifications mean and how do they affect your riding experience? In this article, we’ll break down the differences between these classes and explain what Pedego has to offer.

Class 1 Ebikes for Pedal-Assist Convenience – Let’s Have Some Fun

Let’s start with Class 1 ebikes. These are electric bikes on which you must pedal in order to use the motor. It’s just like riding a conventional bicycle but with the added benefit of a motor that senses your pedaling, thus providing assistance. You’ll feel like you have a constant tailwind, making your ride easier and more enjoyable. The maximum speed for Class 1 ebikes is 20mph, and you don’t need a driver’s license to ride one. To ride a Pedego bike, you must be 16 or older. The Elevate is Pedego’s only Class 1 electric bike, specifically designed for mountain bike trails where Class 1 ebikes are allowed.

Class 2 Ebikes with Effortless Throttle Acceleration – Unleashing Power & Control

Next up are Class 2 ebikes. These electric bikes are equipped with a motor controlled by a throttle. With a Class 2 ebike, you don’t have to pedal to benefit from the motor. Simply press the throttle, and off you go. This feature allows for easy acceleration. Keep in mind that the more you rely on the throttle without pedaling, the quicker you will drain the battery. As with Class 1 ebikes, Class 2 ebikes have a maximum speed of 20mph, where you also don’t need a driver’s license but have to be 16 or older to ride a Pedego. All Pedego Class 2 ebikes also have pedal assist, with the exception of the Tandem. All Pedego models, except for the Elevate, are available in Class 2 configuration, providing you with a wide range of options to choose from.

Class 3 Ebikes for High-Powered Commuting and Thrilling Rides – Unleash the Speed

Finally, we have Class 3 ebikes. These are the fastest “legal” electric bikes, with a maximum speed of 28mph. Class 3 ebikes are still considered bicycles and do not require a driver’s license or license plate. However, they do require you to be 17 or older and wear a helmet by law. Class 3 ebikes provide pedal assist, just like Class 1 ebikes, but they can reach higher speeds. They may also have a throttle, but the speed of the throttle remains capped at 20mph. Read on how throttle speed and pedal assist work here. Class 3 ebikes are great for commuting or for riders who want a bit more speed and power during their rides. Depending on the region, certain Pedego models can be upgraded to Class 3 capabilities, providing an even more exhilarating riding experience. Please consult with your local Pedego dealer or refer to local laws to determine the availability of Class 3 upgrades for specific models.

Navigating Electric Bike Regulations: Understanding the Legalities and Guidelines for a Smooth Ride

Riding ebikes requires knowledge of applicable regulations and restrictions. For instance, the National Park Service (NPS) has specific restrictions on electric bikes in wilderness areas and may impose additional rules in other parts of national parks. Moreover, individual states have their own laws concerning ebike access, age restrictions, helmet mandates, licensing, and insurance. We recommend familiarizing yourself with the laws in your state and any specific regulations in your intended riding areas for a safe and informed ride.

Welcome to the world of electric bikes, where we’re excited to share all you need to know about how far your new electric bike can take you. Whether you’re looking for an eco-friendly and efficient mode of transportation or seeking a new way to explore and go on adventures, ebikes have a lot to offer. One of the most frequently asked questions about electric bikes is, “How far can it go on a single charge?” In this blog post, we’ll explore ways to maximize the range and factors that affect your ebike’s range.

How to Maximize the Range of Electric Bikes

To maximize your ebike’s range, follow these five tips:

1. Go easy on the throttle

We know that it’s tempting to get going with the throttle and go as fast as you can when you get a new ebike, but this will drain your bike’s battery quickly and significantly reduce your range. The throttle uses a lot more battery power, so be mindful of how often you use it. Instead, ease into it and slowly accelerate, in order to enjoy a longer battery life.

2. Pedal while you accelerate

While easing off the throttle, you will naturally start pedaling more. Pedal assist conserves your battery and is the best way to optimize your electric bike’s efficiency. This pays off in huge energy savings in the long run!

3. Ensure you have the correct tire pressure

Correct tire pressure is essential for your ride’s comfort, feel, and range. Having the correct tire pressure makes your battery use less energy to accelerate than with underinflated tires. Filled tires add distance to your range that can easily be achieved by taking the time to pump your tires, which could result in a few extra miles!

4. Maximize Your E-Bike’s Mileage with Consistent Speed

Consistent speed plays a crucial role in maximizing mileage on your ebike, similar to the fuel consumption in a car that can be optimized with reduced braking and accelerating. Maintaining a steady pace without pedaling or using the throttle can have a significant positive impact on your ebike’s range. Coasting is particularly advantageous when approaching a stop, riding on a smooth path, descending a steep incline, or when you come across a picturesque view. By adopting a conservative approach to speed and gradually slowing down, you can naturally reduce energy consumption. There’s no need to maintain high speeds throughout your entire ride; instead, take the time to slow down, savor the experience, and enjoy your journey!

5. Ride in the correct gear

Riding in the wrong gear puts a huge strain on your battery over time. As you figure out how you ride, you’ll get more accustomed to shifting gears on your ebike correctly to conserve your battery and increase your range. Riding on flat streets can be great for low-power assistance, whereas on a steep hill, you can lower the gear and power to get the ideal speed and efficiency. For conserving your battery, shift to a low gear before stopping so that way when you start pedaling for your next ride, you won’t be using unnecessary battery assistance to propel you. This technique will extend the range of your electric bike.

With a Pedego Electric Bike, adventure is just a ride away

Factors Affecting Electric Bike Range: Exploring the Key Determinants of Electric Bike Performance

Several factors affect an ebike’s range, including:

  • Total weight of the load, including the rider and gear
  • Your average riding speed
  • Your riding position
  • The bike’s tire pressure and tire type
  • Terrain and hill grade
  • Wind conditions
  • Road quality and bumps
  • The outside temperature
  • Your pedal capability and fitness
  • Type of battery
  • Battery size
  • Age of the battery – over time a lithium-ion battery loses capacity

Understanding Electric Bike Batteries: Power, Capacity, and Range Explained

The battery on an electric bike is arguably one of the most important features, as it is the sole reason why you buy an electric bike – to be able to go further and faster than you would be able to on a regular bike. The real question is, how far can you go exactly? The answer is dependent on a lot of factors, but understanding how the battery works is a first step.

Pedego batteries come in 36, 48, and 52 volts. The voltage of a battery is analogous with the horsepower in a car. For instance, the higher the voltage of a battery, the more power your bike will get. The advantage of a higher voltage is that it has increased power, which in turn, can have your Pedego go faster for a longer duration of time.

The other measurement of an electric bike battery is amp-hours or Ah. Amp-hours correspond to the measure of current the battery can deliver in one hour at a usable voltage or the measure of capacity your battery has. In short, the higher your amp-hours are, the greater distance you will be able to travel.

This is simple math and you can easily predict how far you will be able to go on the battery you choose. Since all batteries have both a voltage and amp-hour rating, you can multiply the two together to get watt-hours. Watt-hours is an objective measurement of the actual amount of energy stored in any battery.

Volt x Amp-hours = Watt-hours

Extend Your Electric Bike Adventures: Mastering Range Optimization Through Tips, Factors, and Battery Expertise

The world of ebikes offers exciting possibilities for eco-friendly transportation and thrilling adventures. Understanding how far your electric bike can take you is essential, and we’ve explored various tips to maximize its range. By using the throttle sparingly, pedaling while accelerating, maintaining proper tire pressure, coasting when possible, and selecting the correct gear, you can optimize your ebike’s efficiency and extend its range.

It’s important to consider the factors that impact ebike range, such as weight, speed, terrain, battery type and size, and more. The battery itself plays a crucial role. Pedego offers options of 36V, 48V and 52V batteries that deliver increased power and longer durations. By multiplying voltage and amp-hours, you can estimate watt-hours, providing an objective measure of stored energy. However, it’s important to remember that external factors can influence the actual distance traveled.

Are you considering taking up cycling as a way to improve your physical and mental health? Electric bikes may be just the thing for you. Ebikes are an excellent way to enjoy the great outdoors, get some exercise, and reduce your carbon footprint. A recent study has demonstrated that engaging the pedal assist mode on an electric bike can help riders burn approximately 444 calories per hour. Comparatively, pedaling a traditional bike burns around 552 calories per hour, resulting in a mere 20% difference. In this blog post, we will explore this and some of the other top health benefits of riding an electric bike.

Exploring 9 Advantages of Electric Bikes for Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Discover the top 9 remarkable health benefits that electric bikes provide. From effortless moderate exercise to calorie burning, improved endurance, stress reduction, increased happiness, and more. With Pedego Electric Bikes, you can experience these incredible advantages while enjoying the joy of riding.

  1. Boost Your Fitness Efforts with Moderate Exercise on Electric Bikes
Electric bikes require you to pedal, just like a traditional bike. The difference is that the motor gives you assistance, which means you can go farther and faster with less effort. The good news is that research has shown that riding an ebike still provides moderate physical activity, which is essential for improving your fitness level. You can customize the amount of effort you put in and the motor will adjust accordingly.
  2. Improve Physical Health Effortlessly with Electric Bikes
Riding an ebike is a great way to burn calories and build endurance. A study conducted at Brigham Young University found that people who rode electric bikes experienced nearly as much exercise as those who rode mountain bikes without feeling like they had a difficult workout. Cycling can help you lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve your overall health.
  3. Experience Easy and Accessible Riding with Electric Bikes
One of the biggest advantages of electric bikes is that they make cycling more accessible. Pedal assist helps with inclines, and rough terrain, which allows for a smoother ride and reduces stress on joints. You can also ride with greater power than a regular bike. And it gets people cycling who may not otherwise ride a traditional bike because of physical aches and pains.
  4. Enhance Mental Well-Being: Ride Your Way to Happiness with Electric Bikes
Riding an ebike can be a great way to reduce stress and improve your mood. Exercise, change of scenery, and fresh air all contribute to a sense of well-being. Cycling is also known to increase productivity and provide for a more restful sleep. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend time with friends and family.

  1. Embrace Eco-Friendly Commuting: Electric Bikes as a Great Car Alternative
Electric bikes are an excellent way to commute to work or run quick errands. Because they are classified as bikes, in many cities, you can ride in bike lanes, and through parks. With alternative ways to travel to your destination, your commute can be faster than a car stuck in traffic. When people ride their ebike instead of driving, they cut down on gas and pollution, helping to improve air quality and the environment. Read our blog post on “The Perfect Commuting Solution for a Stress-Free Day” to learn more about Pedego commuting options.
  2. Inclusive Fitness: Electric Bikes for All Levels of Physical Abilities
Ebikes are not just for the physically fit. They are a great option for people who may not have the strength or stamina to ride a traditional bike. With pedal assist, you can go farther and faster than you would be able to on a regular bike. Plus, you can still get a good workout even with the motor’s assistance. Read our blog post on how throttle and pedal assist work.
  3. Gentle on Joints: Electric Bikes Provide Low-Impact Cycling
Cycling is a low-impact exercise that puts minimal stress on your joints. This makes it an excellent option for people who may have knee or hip problems. Electric bikes are even better because the motor’s assist means you can ride longer and further without putting undue strain on your joints.
  4. Affordable and Convenient: Electric Bikes for Easy Transportation
Compared to other modes of transportation, electric bikes are relatively affordable. They require minimal maintenance and are easy to charge. Plus, you can park them almost anywhere, which makes them a convenient option for commuting or running errands. In other words, you get exercise doing your dailies, as well. Read our blog post on basic tips to maintain your ebike.
  5. Unleash Versatility: Electric Bikes for Commuting, Recreation, and Group Cycling
Electric bikes are incredibly versatile. You can use them for commuting, recreational cycling, or exploring new trails. They are also great for people who want to bike with their friends or family but may not have the same level of fitness. In that sense, they are an equalizer that can match the activity across all ages, stamina, and health levels.

If you’re an electric bike owner, you’ll want to ensure that your investment lasts a long time. Regular maintenance is essential, particularly if you enjoy off-road riding where dirt can take a toll on your bike. Proper care and maintenance can also help your ebike perform at its best and extend the life of the battery and motor. Here are four tips to keep your bike in top shape.

How to keep your electric bike clean, charged and rolling

  1. Keep Your Bike Clean One of the easiest ways to keep your ebike in good condition is to keep it clean. When dirt builds up, wipe it down with a damp cloth. This helps to prevent dirt from causing damage to your bike. If your bike gets wet, make sure to dry it off with a clean cloth before putting it away. Also, keeping your bike lubricated will help it run smoothly.
  2. Don’t Leave Your Bike Exposed to the Elements Moisture can cause rust and other damage to your ebike. To avoid this, don’t leave your bike outside in the rain, dew, or snow. Even if you use a cover, moisture can still get through. If you have to store your bike outside, make sure it’s under a covered area and protected from the elements.
  3. Charging and Storing the Battery Your ebike’s battery is one of its most important components. To keep it working properly, charge it in a dry location at room temperature. Avoid leaving the battery fully charged or fully depleted for long periods of time, as this can reduce its lifespan. Extreme heat and cold are also enemies of ebike batteries, so avoid storing your bike in direct sunlight. Be sure to use the correct charger provided to you, as an incorrect one could damage your ebike battery.
  4. Tire Care Checking the tire pressure regularly is crucial to preventing tire damage and ensuring a comfortable ride. Optimal tire pressure also balances grip and rolling resistance. Make sure the tire pressure is in the recommended range and check for any signs of damage. Lastly, regularly check the tires for wear.

Electric Bikes: The Perfect Commuting Solution for a Stress-Free Day https://pedegoelectricbikes.com/blog/commuting-ebike-benefits/ Mon, 08 May 2023 11:17:49 +0000 https://pedegoelectricbikes.com/?post_type=blog&p=99450 Electric bikes are becoming a popular mode of transportation due to their many benefits, including making cycling more accessible, saving time and money, reducing carbon footprint, and reducing muscle strain.

Electric bikes are becoming increasingly popular as a mode of transportation and for good reason. With the ability to provide assistance to the rider, they make cycling more accessible to people of all ages and fitness levels. Not only that, but ebikes can also save you time and money, and reduce your carbon footprint versus when commuting with a car. So whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or new to commuting on two wheels, read on to discover why you should consider making the switch to an electric bike and what benefits commuting with an ebike brings you.

8 Reasons Why Commuting With An Electric Bike Benefits You

Riding an ebike for your daily commute offers a multitude of benefits. The following is just a glimpse of the many benefits that ebiking can offer, and the list goes on!

  • Saving time: With an electric bike, you can avoid traffic jams and the hassle of finding a parking spot. Pedego’s electric bike batteries come in 36V, 48V, and 52V options, so you can go further and faster without breaking a sweat. And with the ability to reach speeds of up to 28 mph, you’ll be at your destination in no time. Plus, your Pedego bike is built to last, so you can leave your worries about wear and tear behind.
  • Easier to go up hills: The motor provides assistance, and the amount depends on the support level chosen, so riders will be fresher and less likely to stop to recoup after cresting a climb.
  • Good for the environment: Opting for an ebike instead of a car reduces carbon footprint and noise pollution. Transportation is the second biggest source of greenhouse gases, and shifting from car to bike for short trips can reduce carbon footprint by 5%. Electric bikes move almost silently, which helps to quieten down inner city areas.
  • Less sweat and muscle strain: The motor helps reduce the effort level, particularly on hills and accelerations, which means less strain on muscles and joints. Plus, it’s helpful for beginners getting into cycling who may not have developed the necessary muscles and skills to move fluently on a bike. And the best part is you can arrive at your destination without breaking a sweat.
  • Improving Fitness: Research suggests that regular aerobic exercise, including biking, decreases the risk of developing severe heart disease and vascular disease. It also improves overall cardiac function, so your heart works more efficiently.

  • Better mental health: Cycling is a great way to improve mental health and well-being. It offers several benefits, including reduced anxiety and stress, and greater happiness. Commuting with an electric bike provides a convenient way to start your day at work with a fresh mind and wind down after a long day at work. Additionally, cycling produces endorphins that provide a number of benefits such as reducing stress, enhancing your immune system, increasing pain tolerance, and slowing the impacts of aging. Using your own transportation instead of relying on public transportation puts you in control of your schedule and minimizes stress. With an ebike, you can leave the office early or stay late to complete tasks without worrying about coordinating with the next bus schedule. Incorporating cycling into your daily routine can lead to a happier, healthier, and less stressful life.
  • Charging your electrc bike is a breeze: Unlike refueling a gas-guzzling car, all you need to do is plug your bike’s battery into a power outlet and let it charge. Plus, the more you pedal, the farther you can go, which means you’ll conserve battery life and get the most out of each charge. However, keep in mind that while pedaling can help you go further, it won’t actually charge the battery.
  • It’s safe: When it comes to commuting with an electric bike, safety is a top priority. Ebikes are equipped with an electric motor that can reach speeds of up to 28 miles per hour, depending on the class of ebike. Riders can easily adjust the level of pedal assist to control how much help they get from the motor, and Pedego Electric Bikes also come with built-in throttle assist, which allows the motor to move the bike forward without pedaling. This feature is especially useful when commuting in traffic, as it allows for seamless integration into traffic flow and keeps riders safe by allowing them to keep pace more easily alongside cars. Plus, the ebike motor provides quick acceleration, which is helpful for getting started at traffic lights. Of course, wearing a well-fitting helmet is essential for maximum safety, such as the built in lights and reflectors increase visibility and keep you safe while commuting at night.

How Do Throttle and Pedal Assist Work? https://pedegoelectricbikes.com/blog/throttle-pedal-assist-work/ Thu, 17 Dec 2020 17:08:46 +0000 https://www.pedegoelectricbikes.com/blog/ Discover the benefits of pedal assist and throttle modes on electric bikes. Pedal assist, such as Pedego's PedalSense, provides effortless riding at your desired speed, while torque and cadence sensors engage the motor for a tailored experience.

The great thing about an electric bike is that you can choose to get in a workout if you desire, or you can sit back and relax to enjoy the ride. This freedom an electric bike gives you is what a regular bicycle lacks– options. An electric bike allows you to ride further and longer, and with the help of pedal assist and the throttle, you can even go faster than you would on a regular bike. What exactly do these settings do on your electric bike, and which one is best suited for your needs? The answer may be subjective, depending on the type of cyclist you are and your desired ride, but Pedego is here to help guide you in the direction that is best for you!

What is Pedal Assist?

Pedal assist is an operating mode on an electric bike where once it is activated, the motor kicks in while you are pedaling. Designed to help you pedal easier, pedal assist has varied settings that will allow you to effortlessly ride along at your desired speed. Once pedal assist is turned on, you will feel a little extra ‘oomph’ propelling you forward, making it easy to ride long distances without getting tired or sore the next day.

Pedego pedal assist screen display on electric bike.

Torque vs. Cadence Pedal Assist

On Pedego bikes, pedal assist is called PedalSense, which is a trademarked proprietary software engineered by Pedego to create a unique riding experience tailored to each individual model. For pedal assist to work, there is a sensor that ‘talks’ to the bike’s motor so you can go your desired speed based on your pedal assist settings. There are two types of sensors, cadence, and torque, and both of them tell the bike’s PAS (pedal assist system) when to engage the motor and propel the bike forward.

Cadence

Most Pedego models have a cadence sensor: Boomerang, City Commuter, Interceptor, Latch, Stretch, Trail Tracker, Element. A cadence sensor turns the motor on when you are pedaling and off when you stop. On Pedego bikes, the cadence sensor has a set expectation of plateauing at a set speed depending on which pedal assist setting you are on.

PAS 1 = 8 mph
PAS 2 = 11 mph
PAS 3 = 14 mph
PAS 4 = 17 mph
PAS 5 = 20 mph
PAS 6 = throttle only

For instance, if you are on pedal assist setting 3, you will go no more than 14 mph. If you are on PAS 3 and want to go faster, however, you can either engage the throttle to zip by people or bump up to PAS 4.

Torque

Torque sensors are slightly more advanced in their function, but rather than plateauing based on your pedal assist setting like the cadence sensor, the torque sensor gives you proportional assistance based on how hard you are pedaling. In short, the harder you pedal the more power it gives to the motor. Torque sensors are incorporated into a few Pedego bikes, such as the Ridge Rider and Platinum models.

Regardless of which type of pedal assist sensor you have in your bike, pedal assist allows you to ride longer and further. Pedal assist flattens hills and makes riding your bike nearly effortless despite what the road may bring ahead.

What is a Throttle?

The throttle mode on an electric bike is similar to a motorcycle or electric scooter, as when it is engaged the motor provides power and propels the bike forward. It gives you full power on-demand with no automatic pedal assistance involved. The throttle is what allows you to sit back and enjoy a relaxing ride if you are looking to just cruise, as the bike can operate without having to pedal.

On Pedego bikes, the throttle style is a half grip twist, so when the throttle is twisted towards you the bike is ready to get up and go! Other ways you can use the throttle is by safely passing others when on a bike path, accelerating yourself up a large hill, or using it to stabilize yourself as you get ready to take off on your bike.

Pedego Throttle

Which is Better?

Both the throttle and PAS have the same purpose on an electric bike– to propel it forward by using electric power. The difference lies in how the user interacts with the system. The real question is– which is better, throttle or pedal assist?

To answer this question, you must ask yourself what your intentions are when riding. If you are looking to sit back and enjoy the scenery, using the throttle is the best way to do that. On the other hand, if you are interested in getting a little workout in and actively pedaling, then pedal assist mode is the way to go. Some electric bikes only have one or the other, depending on the brand, but luckily for you, Pedego offers both a PAS and throttle control on most of their electric bike models. This allows you to ride with a mixture of both the throttle and pedal assist, giving you the best of both worlds and options on how to approach your desired ride.

Interested in trying out a Pedego for yourself? Book a test ride at your local dealer to see the difference between the throttle and pedal assist settings on a Pedego.

The Complete Guide to Electric Bike Batteries https://pedegoelectricbikes.com/blog/complete-guide-electric-bike-batteries/ Thu, 17 Dec 2020 00:44:17 +0000 https://www.pedegoelectricbikes.com/blog/ Excerpt:
Discover the key factors that determine the range of your electric bike, such as volts and amp-hours. Learn how to calculate the potential distance you can travel based on your battery's watt-hours. Explore the battery options for Pedego bike models and get expert assistance from the Pedego tech team to choose the right battery for your needs.

The post The Complete Guide to Electric Bike Batteries appeared first on Pedego Electric Bikes.

]]>
The battery on an electric bike is arguably one of the most important features, as it is the sole reason why you buy an electric bike– to be able to go further and faster than you would be able to on a regular bike. The real question is, how far can you go exactly? The answer is dependent on a lot of factors, but understanding how the battery works is the first step.

The Basics of Batteries

When you are first shopping for an electric bike, choosing which battery is best for your needs can be a daunting task; however, it is not as complex as it may seem. The first thing to know is electric bike batteries are categorized by both volts and amp-hours.

Electric bike batteries for Pedego come in both 36V and 48V, with the ‘V’ corresponding to the number of volts in the battery. The amount of volts in a battery is synonymous with what horsepower is in a car. For instance, the higher the number of volts in the battery, the more power your bike will get. The advantage of a higher voltage is that it has increased power, which in turn, can have your Pedego go faster for a longer duration of time.

The other component of an electric bike battery is amp-hours or AH. Amp-hours corresponds to the measure of current the battery can deliver in one hour at a usable voltage or the measure of capacity your battery has. In short, the higher your amp-hours are, the greater distance you will be able to travel.

Putting it Together

Unfortunately, there is not one standard way to determine the potential range each battery will have; yet, there is a simple math problem you can calculate to help you predict how far you will be able to go on the battery you choose. Since all batteries have both a voltage and amp-hour rating, if you multiply the two together you get watt-hours. Watt-hours is an objective measurement of the actual amount of energy stored in any battery.

Volt x Amp-hours = Watt-hours

Completing this math equation will give you a range of how far you can go, but in order to calculate the exact number of miles, it may be a little more complicated. This is because many outside factors can play a role in the actual distance your battery will be able to travel. For instance, if you are riding up a lot of hills, into a headwind, or have a lot of cargo weight on your bike these factors can decrease the range of your battery. Also, which pedal assist setting you are on, the outdoor conditions you are riding in, the age of your battery, and the condition of your bike, are all factors to consider when calculating your estimated battery range. On average, you can expect to use between 12 and 24 watt-hours per mile; however, this number can fluctuate depending on the influence of external factors.

Electric bike battery chart

Listed below are the battery options for each of Pedego’s bike models:
