Are you considering taking up cycling as a way to improve your physical and mental health? Electric bikes may be just the thing for you. Ebikes are an excellent way to enjoy the great outdoors, get some exercise, and reduce your carbon footprint. A recent study has demonstrated that engaging the pedal assist mode on an electric bike can help riders burn approximately 444 calories per hour. Comparatively, pedaling a traditional bike burns around 552 calories per hour, resulting in a mere 20% difference. In this blog post, we will explore this and some of the other top health benefits of riding an electric bike.

Exploring 9 Advantages of Electric Bikes for Physical and Mental Wellbeing

Discover the top 9 remarkable health benefits that electric bikes provide. From effortless moderate exercise to calorie burning, improved endurance, stress reduction, increased happiness, and more. With Pedego Electric Bikes, you can experience these incredible advantages while enjoying the joy of riding.

  1. Boost Your Fitness Efforts with Moderate Exercise on Electric Bikes
Electric bikes require you to pedal, just like a traditional bike. The difference is that the motor gives you assistance, which means you can go farther and faster with less effort. The good news is that research has shown that riding an ebike still provides moderate physical activity, which is essential for improving your fitness level. You can customize the amount of effort you put in and the motor will adjust accordingly.
  2. Improve Physical Health Effortlessly with Electric Bikes
Riding an ebike is a great way to burn calories and build endurance. A study conducted at Brigham Young University found that people who rode electric bikes experienced nearly as much exercise as those who rode mountain bikes without feeling like they had a difficult workout. Cycling can help you lose weight, reduce the risk of heart disease, and improve your overall health.
  3. Experience Easy and Accessible Riding with Electric Bikes
One of the biggest advantages of electric bikes is that they make cycling more accessible. Pedal assist helps with inclines, and rough terrain, which allows for a smoother ride and reduces stress on joints. You can also ride with greater power than a regular bike. And it gets people cycling who may not otherwise ride a traditional bike because of physical aches and pains.
  4. Enhance Mental Well-Being: Ride Your Way to Happiness with Electric Bikes
Riding an ebike can be a great way to reduce stress and improve your mood. Exercise, change of scenery, and fresh air all contribute to a sense of well-being. Cycling is also known to increase productivity and provide for a more restful sleep. Plus, it’s a fun way to spend time with friends and family.

Don’t let anything hold you back!
  1. Embrace Eco-Friendly Commuting: Electric Bikes as a Great Car Alternative
Electric bikes are an excellent way to commute to work or run quick errands. Because they are classified as bikes, in many cities, you can ride in bike lanes, and through parks. With alternative ways to travel to your destination, your commute can be faster than a car stuck in traffic. When people ride their ebike instead of driving, they cut down on gas and pollution, helping to improve air quality and the environment. Read our blog post on “The Perfect Commuting Solution for a Stress-Free Day” to learn more about Pedego commuting options.
  2. Inclusive Fitness: Electric Bikes for All Levels of Physical Abilities
Ebikes are not just for the physically fit. They are a great option for people who may not have the strength or stamina to ride a traditional bike. With pedal assist, you can go farther and faster than you would be able to on a regular bike. Plus, you can still get a good workout even with the motor’s assistance. Read our blog post on how throttle and pedal assist work.
  3. Gentle on Joints: Electric Bikes Provide Low-Impact Cycling
Cycling is a low-impact exercise that puts minimal stress on your joints. This makes it an excellent option for people who may have knee or hip problems. Electric bikes are even better because the motor’s assist means you can ride longer and further without putting undue strain on your joints.
  4. Affordable and Convenient: Electric Bikes for Easy Transportation
Compared to other modes of transportation, electric bikes are relatively affordable. They require minimal maintenance and are easy to charge. Plus, you can park them almost anywhere, which makes them a convenient option for commuting or running errands. In other words, you get exercise doing your dailies, as well. Read our blog post on basic tips to maintain your ebike.
  5. Unleash Versatility: Electric Bikes for Commuting, Recreation, and Group Cycling
Electric bikes are incredibly versatile. You can use them for commuting, recreational cycling, or exploring new trails. They are also great for people who want to bike with their friends or family but may not have the same level of fitness. In that sense, they are an equalizer that can match the activity across all ages, stamina, and health levels.

Cycling is a great aerobic activity, helping you build muscle, manage weight, and improve circulation. The COVID-19 pandemic has even led to a cycling resurgence. Since the start of the pandemic, one in ten American adults has started riding the bike again after a year or more of not doing so. Bike sales and rentals have also boomed, and big cities like Milan, New York, and Paris have opened new bike lanes to accommodate the influx of cyclists. As cycling becomes a bigger part of your everyday life, it’s important not only to have a durable bike, but also to have accessories that will personalize your ride and even make it safe and convenient to use. If you’re looking for good additions to your bike, below are a few suggestions:

Bike streamers

Bike streamers may feel old school or retro, but they’re a fun way of personalizing your bike no matter your age. There are shops that sell bike streamers, such as Retro Your Ride, which uses ribbons that are highly durable so they don’t break, fade, or shed. Alternatively, you can also make your own streamers so you can exercise more creativity and control over the output. The length of the streamers you buy or make depends on you, however 14 inches would be what looks best on adult bikes.

Baskets

Having a bag on your person may restrict your movement on the bike. So to help you carry items easily, you can install bike baskets. You can choose between front and rear baskets depending on what you usually carry. Front baskets are handlebar-mounted and smaller than rear baskets, so they’re more suitable for carrying smaller and lighter items — such as light grocery shopping. Meanwhile, rear baskets can fit nearly anything, such as your bag of work essentials. However, rear baskets typically don’t have lids, so it might not be such a good idea to have extremely valuable or fragile items in them.

Anti-theft gadgets

Because of people’s increased interest in bicycles, they have become a hot commodity and prone to theft. Fortunately, there are many anti-theft gadgets that you can attach to your bicycle. One example is Sherlock, which is an invisible GPS anti-theft device that works with the Sherlock app. It’s a plastic tube that encases a flexible printed circuit board, or PCB, which can be inserted into both straight and straight-and-drop handlebars. Sherlock is made with a high-speed PCB design with a fast edge, which allows signals to radiate from the route and couple into adjacent routes in the gadget without creating signal integrity problems. This means that when you turn Sherlock on when you leave your bike unattended, the device will almost immediately be able to alert you if the bike is moved. You’ll also be able to continuously track it.

GPS cycling computers

A GPS cycling computer has the core function of tracking your position, and displaying speed, time, and distance. But modern GPS devices have new features such as smartphone pairing, which makes for easier setup and customization. Another addition is incident detection. This monitors your activity and notifies your contacts if it detects sudden stops and impacts, which might happen during collisions and crashes. Regardless of the features you want in your GPS, you’ll need one with a good mount system so you don’t have to worry about it accidentally falling off. Stages Cycling’s Dash M50 has one of the most robust and secure mount systems, so it’s great even for mountain biking. It also has a bright and crisp screen that’s easy to read, whether you’re viewing it under direct sunlight or during the night. This GPS also offers preloaded routes and turn-by-turn directions that you can create in Stages Link or import from online mobile services like Strava.

Helmet

A helmet isn’t exactly something that accessorizes your bike, but you should never be on a bike without one. It is your first line of defense, helping reduce your risk of head injury should you fall off your bike or collide with something else, such as another cyclist. A good helmet should fit properly, meaning it stays in place if you shake your head. You’ll also want one that’s well-ventilated so you can stay cool throughout your cycling journey. One of the great helmets currently available is the Thousand Heritage Bike Helmet, a minimalistic but stylish and comfortable accessory. It has seven air vents and three cooling channels to help regulate the temperature around your head. It comes in a variety of colors too, such as mint and rose gold, so you can take your pick depending on what matches your bike.

Discover Pedego’s accessories

Cycling is a fun exercise since you get to ride on different roads and trails — you can take inspiration from the Wanderpreneurs and go on various scenic routes, such as the Red Canyon in Las Vegas. And using the above pointers, you’ll be able to do so in both safety and style.

In 2017, the Brooklyn-based Interfaith Medical Center started a biking initiative. The hospital’s employees and patients, who were afflicted with conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure, participated in the bike share program, which encouraged them to be active and seek alternative forms of transportation.

LaRay Brown, Interfaith’s CEO, stated that this initiative is to not only promote the physical wellness of their community, but also their mental health. Biking is indeed an activity that can boost mental wellness on top of its physical health benefits, and we can expect community health leaders like Interfaith Medical Center to promote it. This is especially true as non-clinical roles are being created to specialize in mental health, and more people are studying to work in these roles at higher education levels. Professionals who took healthcare studies are now working in community health and health education, and are able to provide good advice to the people in their care. With a specialization in mental health as part of their training, their job is to promote effective strategies, such as bike riding, for community members so they can care for their mental and emotional well-being.

Two women riding Pedego e-bikes in a park.

But what’s all the fuss about biking and how can it help your mental health? Below, we break down the wonders it can do for your mind:

It helps you sleep better

If you have problems sleeping, regular cycling can help sync your circadian rhythm, which covers the sleep-wake cycle. This is because cycling ensures you get more exposure to sunlight, which makes you more alert, awake, and active. Then when it gets dark, your body starts to produce melatonin, a hormone that promotes sleep and also transmits signals that will help you stay asleep throughout the night.

A lesser-known influence of the circadian rhythm is how it affects a person’s mental health, and a good rhythm can reduce the risk of conditions like depression and bipolar disorder. Cycling also reduces the levels of cortisol. This stress hormone can prevent you from getting regenerative, deep sleep — so lowering cortisol levels can counter sleep deprivation.

It improves memory

Mental illness, particularly depression, can cause memory problems like forgetfulness and confusion. Fortunately, high-intensity exercises have been found to boost memory by firing up the parts of the brain associated with memory. Exercises, like high-intensity cycling, can thus help maintain adequate blood flow to the brain and improve overall cognitive activity.

It encourages meditation

You may think of meditation as something that happens in yoga when everything is still in a quiet environment. However, meditation can also happen when you’re “in flow.” Medium describes this as simply being deeply engaged in a task. When you ride a bike, you can experience a merging of action and awareness where you have a sense of being completely in control of your actions. This can be freeing, and will help push anxious thoughts away since you’re just enjoying the moment.

It helps you feel good

Cycling, and exercising in general, is also a form of self-love. After all, taking care of your body and being in good shape will make you feel good. But aside from that, regular cyclists experience what’s called a “cycling high” through the release of endorphins. Because of this natural high, endorphins also help push you beyond your comfort levels. This will help increase your cycling distances over time.

Additionally, cycling releases other happy hormones, namely dopamine and serotonin. Dopamine is known as the feel-good hormone and is connected to the brain’s reward system. Meanwhile, serotonin regulates your mood and emotions. Cycling increases your heart rate, which can quicken the distribution of these hormones.

The easiest way to reap the benefits of cycling, whether physical or mental, is to simply live in the moment and have fun. With people looking for various ways to improve their mental state, they should know that cycling is a great way to do so. Do take advantage of your community’s cycling initiatives or get your own bike to invest in your health.

In 2017 my family of four decided to make a life altering change. We got rid of 90% of our stuff, bought an RV and started traveling full time in our new home on wheels! We were tired of the mundane and busy lives we were leading, and decided to leave it all in search of something more. What we found was bigger and better than we could have imagined…

Only a few short months after we first mentioned the idea of radically changing our lifestyle, we were on the road and driving away from our house in the Atlanta, GA suburbs. It was a whirlwind of major downsizing, planning, researching and DOING. We were determined to make our crazy idea a reality!

After our house was empty and ready for its new occupants, we drove away with a mixture of excitement and sadness. We loved our neighbors and friends we were leaving behind, but had high hopes that there was so much adventure waiting out there for us.

What we quickly found was a slower, more relaxed way of living. There was no more rushing off to meetings or sports practices, no more early alarms for school or tests to stress out over. We were doing our own thing in our own way, and it was amazing.

My husband, Aaron, owned his own small business, so he continued to work as we traveled. I had owned my own photography business, but had gotten burned out and was excited to step away and focus on documenting our travels instead. We pulled the kids out of school and began road schooling them- learning lessons through life on the road!

Without a big mortgage and utility payments, we were saving money by using campground memberships and focusing on free and cheap entertainment such as hiking and biking in the beautiful places we visited. Our bikes were older, and after 2 years on the road, we knew we needed to upgrade to bikes that were made well and would be able to keep up with our active lifestyle!

We stumbled upon a Pedego booth at an RV show we were visiting in Quartzsite, AZ and jumped at the chance to actually get on an e-bike and try it out. Aaron had been intrigued by e- bikes for awhile, but I wasn’t convinced we had the space for them, as our home is only 400sq. ft! The guys at the Pedego booth showed us how the Latch easily folds up, and I excitedly realized it might just work for us to upgrade to e-bikes after all!

After we all test drove one and learned all about how awesome they are, we let that show as proud Pedgeo owners! One huge benefit that sold us on Pedego was the number of stores they have nationwide! Wherever we go, we know we’re not too far from a store in case we need any service or accessories for our Pedegos.

My daughter and I each got a folding Latch, which we love, and my husband and son each chose an Element, and they love being able to ride on the desert trails with their fat tires. We have had quite a few adventures so far with our Pedegos!
We enjoy boondocking, which is camping without hookups, and while we were in Quartzsite, the boys loved taking their Elements on the rocky dirt roads all around the mountains in that area. The friends we were with also enjoyed trying them out and had some pretty epic desert rides there!

Wanderprenuers riding their bikes in the desert.

Our first family ride together started in La Quinta, CA. We stopped by the Pedego store there to say hello to the store owner, Bryan, whom we had met at the Pedego tent in Quartzsite. We asked him where we could ride in the area, and were directed to a great trail nearby. We really enjoyed riding at the Fred Wolf Bear Creek Nature Preserve. There were lots of pretty mountain views!

Huntington Beach Trail was the first beach ride we ever did, and we invited a few family members to join us as we cruised the trail with calming ocean views. On parts of the trail it got a little crowded, and we had to go very slow, but we just enjoyed the salty air and beach vibes and still had a great ride.

One of the most scenic places we’ve ridden is at Red Rock Canyon in Las Vegas. Red Rock canyon is one of our favorite places to visit when we’re in Vegas, and until we got our Pedegos, we had only hiked there. There is a 13 mile scenic drive that is just stunning, and it’s perfect for biking! It’s a wide one way road, perfect for cars and bikers to easily share. Aaron and I went on a day date ride there and it was a memory we’ll never forget!

We often travel with friends, and love letting our friends use our e-bikes as well. We often take turns riding around the RV parks we stay at, getting exercise in the most fun way! We love causing our friends and family to fall in love with Pedegos, just as we have. It’s a guaranteed smile when they first feel the pedal assist push them to 20mph for the first time!

We have an amazing summer itinerary planned, and we’re super excited to find new trails and new adventures. If you want to follow along with our travels, we post daily on instagram.com/ the.wanderpreneurs as well as facebook.com/thewanderpreneurs and we have a blog with lots of information about RV living. www.thewanderpreneurs.com. If you see that we’re in your area, we’d love for you to reach out and say hi and get your recommendations for the best bike trails nearby.

The past 2+ years have been nothing short of amazing. We’ve been stretched and grown in so many ways, and our family is closer than ever. We’re present for every part of our kids’ lives, and we’re making memories that will last a lifetime. Meeting so many other families who are doing exactly what we’re doing has been an unexpected and welcome surprise! Full time RV travel is becoming more and more popular, and we love traveling and doing life with these like- minded people.

We love inspiring others to get outside and also to travel whenever possible. Taking risks and making big changes can be intimidating, but you never know what blessings and adventures could be waiting in the unknown.

Until Next Time,

The Wanderprenuers: Aaron, Lauren, Casen, and Calista

Helping a child in need, Pedego Electric Bikes worked in partnership with Angela’s Angels, a charity that believes compassion combined with technology can provide a positive role in the recovery of pediatric patients, to donate an electric bike to a child at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

On February 24, 2021 Steve Pike and Sherry Roueche, owners of Pedego Glendale Peoria, presented a brand new Pedego Comfort Cruiser to Mark, a 12 year-old child with a heart condition, at the Phoenix Children’s Hospital. Steve and Sherry of Pedego Glendale gifted the bike to Mark in front of his family and cardiologist outside the hospital. Haley Chapman, Corporate Development Officer, from the Phoenix Children’s Hospital shares, “Mark was so surprised and honored the bike was all for him.” Mark’s family shared with Steve and Sherry that he loves riding bikes with his family but was never able to keep up; however, it is with his new Pedego that that will soon change!

“We love supporting the community in which we live and work. My wife, Sherry, and I were honored to be able to make this gift that will have such an impact on his quality of life.” says Steve Pike, Owner at Pedego Glendale Peoria.

Pedego Glendale / Peoria team donated electric bike to child in need

Angela Roberts, Executive Director of Angela’s Angels, initially reached out to Pedego Glendale with this opportunity as she has a close affection for both Pedego and helping others with heart conditions. Angela’s father, Carl Roberts, is a long-time Pedego enthusiast and has experienced heart issues of his own.

Angela shares, “My dad was having heart valve issues– they said he might even have to have surgery– and since he’s been riding his Pedego so much over the last few years, he got a really good check up last week from his cardiologist. The doctor said I don’t know what you’re doing, but keep it up, your valve is healing. My dad shared with his doctor that he was riding his Pedego electric bike everywhere and in fact he said, ‘I’m on it today!!!’ It’s just so amazing that my dad at 78 years old can ride 30 miles a day on an electric bike.”

Carl Roberts is a customer of Pedego Glendale and when Steve and Sherry heard about the donation opportunity, they didn’t give it a second thought, as they knew they wanted to help pay it forward to a child in need. Pedego Glendale worked closely with both Pedego Headquarters and Angela’s Angels to execute the donation and are glad they were able to put a smile on Mark’s face.

Pedego is looking forward to hearing about how much Mark loves riding his new Comfort Cruiser and the adventures it takes him on. If you are interested in trying out a Pedego bike for yourself in the Glendale/ Peoria area or want to learn more about Pedego’s full-range lineup of e-bikes, rentals, services, and accessories be sure to visit Steve and Sherry at Pedego Glendale.

It is no secret that everyone has been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, in some way. While the pandemic has forced us to adapt to a new version of normal, we have all been itching for a reason to go outside and explore. That is where your Pedego comes in! We surveyed a few members of our Pedego Owners Group and asked, “How has your Pedego helped you get outside during the pandemic?”

Agnes Knoll – Pedego Cape May

“I am a Nurse working in the hospital during this pandemic. This pandemic has taught me to appreciate every moment. I am not always able to be around family and friends because of the isolation but it allows me more time on my bike. I recently had a birthday and Rich from Pedego Cape May was kind enough to drop off my brand new red Element at my house so I could ride on my birthday. I have been enjoying getting outside for some fresh air and exploring the local area while taking pictures. I especially enjoy riding my Element along the beach and watching the sunset. Hello Fun!”

Pedego rider, Agnes Knoll, on the beach with her Element bike.

Jake Greenberg – Pedego Long Beach Island

“The pandemic has definitely allowed me to spend so much more time on my Pedego. In the summer I would ride everyday. I would ride between 30-40 miles a day!! Now that it’s getting colder out I still try to ride as much as possible. Being a Pedego owner has definitely changed my life for the better in many ways, and I will always be a Pedego owner. I love my Interceptor! Hello Fun!!”

Lisa Cox – Pedego Upland

“My Pedego has given me the freedom to get outside and be active. Prior to the Pandemic other activities took precedence. Now biking on my Pedego is my number one way I get outside and am getting more active.”

Pedego customer, Lisa Cox, riding her Pedego Boomerang.

Erica Wilder – Pedego Twin Cities

“Flexible time allowed me to pick the weather & trail conditions for uncontested exploration across the entire metro & beyond biking up to 60 miles round trip! I was able to explore all different terrain types without daylight constraints.”

Pedego Platinum Interceptor

Erin Cohon – Pedego 101

“My bike has given me tremendous peace of mind. I teach from home and needed an outlet as my gym was closed and walking wasn’t doing it for anymore. Found a Pedego store near me in Westlake Village. Loved the owners; trusted their recommendations and bought the Element. I had to make a few modifications and upgrades to make it more comfortable, but there isn’t a day that goes by where you won’t see me on the trails near my house. Love this little fire-engine-red speedster.”

John Curtis – Pedego Huntington Beach

“In our area Newport Beach, California we have good weather most of the time and great rides on the coast, both north and south for miles. I enjoy the rides almost every other day from 5 miles to 30. We have 4 Pedego bikes so others can ride with us that do not have their own… typically they get them after the rides though, HA! I have explored almost every path in our area including Irvine, Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa– everything from Seal Beach to Dana Point, and even across the Balboa Ferry to the American Legion post 291. I never get tired of the outside… I have been saying, ‘Hello, fun!’ for about 15 years!”

Linda Snyder – Pedego Myrtle Beach

“We are retired but the pandemic has allowed us to still ride while social distancing so we are able to see things, enjoy the outdoors, exercise and of course, have FUN!”

Amazing stories, like these, symbolize one of the positive things the pandemic has brought on. Riding your Pedego can be one of the best ways to get out of the house and break the monotony during these uncertain times– and there is no need to stop riding once it is over. Join the fun and test ride a Pedego at your local dealer… you may just find your new favorite quarantine activity!

Naming prized possessions is something that has become common practice. When you own something you are proud of such as a boat or motorcycle, it is only natural that you give them a specific name out of adoration. This idea that has been ingrained in us proves that you need an excellent name for your Pedego bike as well– since it is your most prized possession, of course!

Ideas for Picking the Perfect Name

1. After your favorite place to ride or bike trail.

Commonly, bikes are named after people’s favorite places to ride or bike trails they have encountered along the way. For instance, National Parks and geographical locations are commonly used as names– Yosemite, Yellowstone, or Teton after the Grand Teton mountains.

2. After your favorite city or state.

Who doesn’t like a reminder of their favorite city? This can be guaranteed when you name your bike after your most-loved city in the world. Whether it is Paris, Chicago, California, or Kentucky, naming your Pedego after a place that is close to your heart is a no-brainer. Naming something after a city or state has got incredibly popular over the years and is a good place to start if you’re having trouble deciding what to name your bike.

3. After a celebrity or professional athlete.

With celebrities and professional athletes being common figures that people look up to, it is no doubt that they are go-to’s for naming your Pedego. Kobe, Lebron, Ronaldo, Serena, Tom Brady, the list is endless for professional athletes that would be a good fit for your bike. Not into sports? Countless celebrity names have gained in popularity to name your personal belongings, such as Beyonce, Tom Cruise, The Rock, etc. Naming your Pedego after someone famous is an easy way to make your bike name easily recognizable to others and help you embody a superstar persona as you ride.

4. After the color of your bike.

Pedego is known for the number of color options offered on their bikes, ranging from classic subdued to uniquely bright colors, they have you covered no matter what your preferences are. Color is a great way to base your bike name off of because it can help you draw inspiration to find a name that suits your Pedego. Whether it is blue, black, or yellow, the color of your bike is the perfect way to draw creativity when picking a name.

5. Something silly.

Pedego is all about fun, so why not portray that in the name of your bike? No matter how outlandish the name may be, all that matters is that you like it! Creating a name for your Pedego is a very personal experience, so you might as well have fun with it.

Take it in Stride

Picking the ‘perfect’ name for your Pedego doesn’t have to be a stressful decision, as it should be quite the opposite– fun! Take your time picking a name, don’t rush, and get to know your bike before committing to a name. Sometimes it takes a little bit to get to know one another before deciding on the name you best see fit. Also, don’t worry too much about the gender of the bike, once you find a name that you like, the gender will come naturally– if it even has one at all.

How To Personalize It

Once you have settled on the perfect name, it is time to make it official! To do so, it is only right that you outfit your bike, as you would a car– with a license plate or ‘bumper’ sticker to indicate what its name is. There are a variety of websites to execute either of these personalizations, such as custom license plate or sticker websites, in addition to a variety of sellers on Etsy, an e-commerce website focused on handmade or vintage items.

New year, new me! How many times have you heard this saying at the beginning of each year? It seems like with each new year, comes a chance to reset and turn your life in a new direction. For instance, becoming a healthier individual is one of, if not the, most common New Year’s resolutions, and with the dumpster fire that 2020 delivered us with, it is no secret that this resolution remains at the top of the list. According to YouGov, an international research data and analytics group, “The most common resolutions for U.S. adults as we head into 2021 are doing more exercise (50%), losing weight (48%), and improving diet (39%).”

These numbers seem quite ambitious and although you may start with good intentions at the beginning of each year, it is sometimes hard to maintain a brand new lifestyle without reverting back to old habits. For instance, a report was done by Dr. Charles Herrick, Chair of Psychiatry, at Nuvance Health, states, “Research shows that as many as 50 percent of adults in the United States make New Year’s resolutions, but fewer than 10 percent keep them for more than a few months.” In that same report, Dr. Herrick shares, “Giving up on New Year’s resolutions is often related to three issues: difficulty breaking old habits, focusing on specific outcomes, and problems with a purpose.” It’s true, sometimes life gets in the way of your well-set intentions, and let’s face it committing to strict diets or lengthy workouts is not always the most enjoyable way to accomplish your goals.

Exercise Disguised as Fun

Luckily, with Pedego you can accomplish your New Year’s resolutions while having fun doing so. Two of Pedego’s core principles are fitness and fun, and with a Pedego electric bike, you are guaranteed to accomplish both. Don’t believe us? Take it from a fitness expert, Denise Austin. She is one of America’s favorite fitness gurus who, over the last 35 years, has sold over 24 million exercise videos, written 12 popular books on health and well-being, and starred in the longest-running fitness TV program in history. “Exercise and Pedego bikes go hand in hand,” says Denise Austin. She uses Pedego as not only part of her fitness program, but also her fun program, meaning that working out doesn’t have to be an activity you dread. To Denise, Pedego means lifestyle, and isn’t that what a New Year’s resolution is? A promise you make to yourself to change your lifestyle.

Living Instead of Existing

When riding a Pedego electric bike, the proof is in the pudding, as once you get on it, you will not want to get off– fun is guaranteed! This holds true for Rhonda Martin who once weighed 457 pounds, yet today is down to 180 pounds after completely changing her life. When she was overweight, it was as if her weight consumed her, as she was physically unable to be part of the world around her. After trying countless diet plans and fads, nothing seemed to work until she got on a Pedego… that is when everything changed for Rhonda. “The first time I rode a Pedego, it was freedom to me. It was back to being a kid again. It was the best feeling I’d felt in a long time. The smile I had on my face when I got back — I swear I had it on for days,” says Rhonda. Since her mobility was limited at first, Pedego was the perfect stepping stone for her to become active again. It allowed her to regain her confidence with her fitness, and she even had fun doing it! Rhonda explains, “Riding my Pedego was something that I wanted to continue to do. It wasn’t something I dreaded. It wasn’t a chore. It was just enjoyment for me.” Rhonda now uses her Pedego daily, as she commutes to and from work, making the 38-mile round trip a welcome part of her day. “It’s not about the weight I’ve lost,” she states. “It’s about the life that I’ve gained. I was merely existing and today I’m truly living my life.”

Turning an unfortunate situation into an act of kindness, a community in Southwest Florida rallies together to support one of their own. Pedego Electric Bikes worked in collaboration with the Bonita Springs community to help replace a stolen electric bike for one of their beloved residents.

Last week Lisa and Skip Badolato, owners of Pedego Fort Myers, heard about the story of Daniel Smith, a dedicated employee of Publix supermarket for nearly 20 years. Daniel’s bike was taken during one of his shifts at the local grocery store, and as someone who uses it as his main form of transportation to and from work, it proved to be a devastating loss. Although it may just seem like just a bike to some people, for Daniel it was much more. Daniel is developmentally challenged and his electric bike provided a great sense of freedom and independence for him. “When I first got it, it was kind of like having a car– it has a key for it and everything. It kind of made me feel like I had a car– I was kind of protective of it,” says Daniel in an interview with the local NBC 2 News in Bonita Springs.

Once Daniel’s community of Bonita Springs caught wind of what had happened to Daniel, it did not sit well with them. As a result, community members decided to rally together and show their support by raising a total of $1200 to go towards a new bike. The Badolato’s then joined in and worked closely with Pedego headquarters to make up the difference and ensure that Daniel was outfitted with a whole new set up.

Veteran Publix employee received support from his community and Pedego to get new electric bike.

Lisa and Skip presented Daniel with his new bike, a Pedego Interceptor, at his work last week. “We were glad that he wasn’t without it for too long,” Lisa said in an interview with WINK News, “And we were able to act quickly. He had the bike very quickly, and now he has a better bike– We’re really excited for him.” The Badolato’s made sure Daniel’s new bike was outfitted with Pedego accessories, 2 locks for extra protection, and a 5-year anti-theft protection warranty to ensure history does not repeat itself.

Daniel was extremely grateful for the outpouring of support, “It’s good to know that there are a lot of people that cared… and that cared enough to help me in my time of need,” Smith said. Daniel’s mom, Libby Smith, was overwhelmed with the act of kindness stating, “This is the best thing that’s ever happened in my life.” Daniel thanks both Pedego and his Bonita Springs community, “Thank you for your love and support, it means a lot to me.”

Pedego was more than happy to be able to help Daniel in his time of need and is looking forward to hearing about how much he loves riding his new Interceptor. If you are interested in trying out a Pedego bike for yourself in southwest Florida or want to learn more about Pedego’s full-range lineup of e-bikes, rentals, services, and accessories be sure to visit Lisa and Skip at Pedego Fort Myers.

Mental & Physical Toll

The toll that social distancing measures will take on our physical and mental well-being is harder to measure, but it’s every bit as real. It’s not natural to be isolated and cooped up indoors.

In a recent Science News report, experts warn that prolonged isolation during the pandemic may worsen or trigger mental health problems.

A similar Science Magazine article cites a 2011 study concluding that over long periods of time, social isolation can increase the risk of a variety of health problems, including heart disease, depression, dementia, and even death.

Hello, fun… (with social distancing)

Biking with social distancing

Thank goodness, biking has NOT been cancelled. It’s one of the few activities left that most people can still safely enjoy!

People for Bikes recently published a handy guide for safe cycling during social distancing.

Whether you venture out alone or with members of your household, being physically active in the great outdoors is like food for the soul!

A Pedego bike owner said it best in a recent e-mail, “It’s the only thing keeping me sane right now!”
